What to Expect During the Test
- Nerve Conduction Study (NCS): Small electrodes are placed on the skin. You’ll feel quick, mild electrical pulses that may cause tingling or brief muscle twitching.
- Electromyography (EMG): A thin, sterile needle electrode is inserted into a few muscles to record electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and during contraction. You may feel a quick pinch, and the muscle may be sore afterward.
- Comfort: Most patients tolerate the test well. There are no lasting effects, and no shocks are given to the brain or spine.
Test Duration: The test usually takes 30–90 minutes, depending on how many areas are being studied.
Risks & Side Effects

- You may notice mild soreness or bruising where the needle was placed, which usually resolves within a day or two.

How to Prepare
- Hair: Please wash your hair the night before or morning of the test. Do not use gels, oils, or sprays, as electrodes need clean contact with the scalp.
- Food/Drink: Eat normally unless instructed otherwise. Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks) for at least 4–6 hours before the test.
- Medications: Take your usual medications unless your doctor gives you specific instructions. Bring a current medication list with you.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing; avoid tops with sequins, metallic fibers, or tight hats/headbands that could interfere with electrode placement.
- Sleep Studies: Sometimes patients are asked to come in sleep-deprived. If this applies to you, our office will provide instructions.

- Recording: You’ll rest quietly in a chair or bed while the EEG records your brain waves. At times, you may be asked to breathe deeply, look at flashing lights, or even try to nap.
