At Innovative Neurology, we provide comprehensive diagnostic services in Murrieta, CA, designed to accurately evaluate and diagnose a wide range of neurological conditions. Our in-house testing capabilities include Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Electromyography (EMG), and Electroencephalography (EEG), allowing us to deliver thorough and accurate assessments tailored to your needs.

Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are tests that measure how well your nerves and muscles are working. Together, they help your neurologist understand the cause of symptoms such as weakness, numbness, tingling, or pain.
Why EMG/NCS May Be Ordered
Your neurologist may recommend these tests to evaluate for:
- Nerve problems (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy)
- Muscle disorders (e.g., myopathy, muscular dystrophy)
- Neuromuscular junction disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis)
- Causes of numbness, tingling, or unexplained weakness
How to Prepare
- Skin: Do not apply lotions, creams, or oils on the day of the test — they interfere with electrode contact.
- Clothing: Wear loose (shorts/tank tops unclothes), comfortable clothing so the arms and legs can be easily examined.
- Medications & Devices: Bring a list of your medications. Note: Please let us know if you take blood thinners, have a pacemaker, or other implanted device.
- Food/Drink: You may eat and drink normally before your test.
What to Expect During the Test
- Nerve Conduction Study (NCS): Small electrodes are placed on the skin. You’ll feel quick, mild electrical pulses that may cause tingling or brief muscle twitching.
- Electromyography (EMG): A thin, sterile needle electrode is inserted into a few muscles to record electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and during contraction. You may feel a quick pinch, and the muscle may be sore afterward.
- Comfort: Most patients tolerate the test well. There are no lasting effects, and no shocks are given to the brain or spine.
Test Duration: The test usually takes 30–90 minutes, depending on how many areas are being studied.
Risks & Side Effects
- EMG/NCS are very safe procedures.
- You may notice mild soreness or bruising where the needle was placed, which usually resolves within a day or two.
- Serious complications are rare. Please let us know if you are on blood thinners or have a condition that affects healing.
Electroencephalography (EEG)
An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe, painless test that records the brain’s electrical activity. It helps doctors understand how the brain is functioning and can be an important part of diagnosing or monitoring neurological conditions.
Why and EEG May Be Ordered
Your neurologist may recommend an EEG to evaluate for:
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Unexplained fainting, blackouts, or spells
- Confusion, memory changes, or “spells” of unresponsiveness
- Monitoring brain activity after an injury, infection, or other illness
How to Prepare
- Hair: Please wash your hair the night before or morning of the test. Do not use gels, oils, or sprays, as electrodes need clean contact with the scalp.
- Food/Drink: Eat normally unless instructed otherwise. Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks) for at least 4–6 hours before the test.
- Medications: Take your usual medications unless your doctor gives you specific instructions. Bring a current medication list with you.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing; avoid tops with sequins, metallic fibers, or tight hats/headbands that could interfere with electrode placement.
- Sleep Studies: Sometimes patients are asked to come in sleep-deprived. If this applies to you, our office will provide instructions.
What to Expect During the Test
- Electrodes: Small, painless electrodes are gently placed on your scalp with a special paste or adhesive.
- Recording: You’ll rest quietly in a chair or bed while the EEG records your brain waves. At times, you may be asked to breathe deeply, look at flashing lights, or even try to nap.
- No Needles or Shocks: The test is completely non-invasive and does not cause pain.
Test Duration: A routine EEG takes about 30–60 minutes. For extended EEGs or overnight monitoring may be ordered if more detailed information is needed.
